Description

Native to Central and South America, Bloodwood can range from a burnt orange to a deep red color. It has a pleasant smell and is quite dense.  The chatoyance, or shimmer, is quite frankly amazing. It’s also one of the heaviest woods we use, making for an excellent set of dice. So much so it’s one of our top 3 recommendations for first time customers.

Bloodwood usually grows in sandy ground in the upland rain forest and is a member of the Brosimium Sp. Among which there are many species. Those of note are B. Paraense, and B. Rubescens which produce the beautiful Bloodwood and Satine woods we use to make our dice. B. Guianese, produces that oh so beautifully rare and fickle Snakewood, where as B. Alicastrum AKA the Bread or Maya Nut, is known for it’s fruit that was staple of the Mayan diet. All Brosimium Sp. are tall trees, growing to heights of 120 feet or more and has a straight, cylindrical trunk that’s mostly clear for 75 feet or more with an average diameter of 35 inch. The smooth barked trunk sometimes exudes a whitish latex. They have broad based elliptic leaves and a fruit that resembles a fig.
